Nicholas J. Contorno, Jr. was born in Wisconsin on July 20, 1938. According to his obituary in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, he began playing the saxophone at age four after hearing it on the radio, and he went on to play cornet and flute as well. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee, and a doctorate from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Stanley Newcomb Kenton was born on December 15, 1911 in Wichita, Kansas. His family lived in California and Colorado before permanently settling in Bell, California, in the Los Angeles area. Kenton's musical career began in his teens, and made his first recordings with Gus Arnheim in 1937, joining Vido Musso's band in 1938, and organizing a rehearsal band which evolved into his own orchestra.
